Little Chefs, Big Discoveries: EYFS Cooking Activities at ISCB

At International School Costa Brava (ISCB), EYFS cooking activities give our youngest learners a practical and enjoyable way to explore, create and grow. In our Early Years Foundation Stage, mixing, measuring and kneading become opportunities to discover new skills and build confidence and independence.

Building fine motor skills and independence

Cooking is much more than preparing food. It is a hands-on learning experience that helps children develop essential skills while having fun.

Through activities such as mixing, measuring, pouring, kneading and decorating, children strengthen their fine motor skills and improve their coordination. Each small task offers a chance to practise, make discoveries and gain confidence in their own abilities.

Preparing ingredients also gives children a meaningful role in a shared activity, helping them take pride in what they can do.

Exploring maths and science through cooking

EYFS cooking activities introduce mathematical and scientific ideas in a practical, meaningful way. Counting ingredients, comparing quantities and recognising shapes all become part of the experience.

As children combine ingredients, they can observe how textures change. A bowl and a spoon become tools for exploration, encouraging children to notice, ask questions and discover through direct experience.

Developing teamwork, communication and creativity

Cooking together creates opportunities to listen, talk and collaborate. Children learn to follow simple instructions, take turns, share materials and work alongside their classmates.

There is room for creativity, too. From preparing ingredients to decorating food, children can contribute their own ideas and enjoy being part of something they have made together.

Discovering new flavours and textures

Food invites children to explore with their senses. New flavours, smells and textures encourage curiosity about ingredients and can help foster healthy eating habits from an early age.

These shared experiences make learning tangible: children can see the ingredients, take part in preparing them and discover the results of their efforts.

Hands-on learning at International School Costa Brava

At ISCB, we believe children learn best when they are actively involved in their own discoveries. Our EYFS cooking activities reflect our commitment to meaningful, engaging and enjoyable learning that nurtures curiosity, independence and a lifelong love of learning.

Sometimes, the most valuable lessons begin with a mixing bowl, a spoon and a little imagination.
