Your path to the best international universities

The only school in the province of Girona offering A-Levels and the British Sixth Form

IS Costa Brava (ISCB) is the only British international school in the province of Girona offering the full British A-Levels programme, including A-Levels, within the official British curriculum. From the early years through to Sixth Form, the school follows the British education system, combining rigorous teaching with an international and multicultural environment. Pupils are taught entirely in English by native-speaking teachers and, through the A-Levels programme, are prepared to access some of the world’s leading universities.

This global approach makes ISCB a benchmark for British education in Spain, where the academic training provided through British Sixth Form is complemented by values such as curiosity, responsibility and an international outlook.

British Baccalaureate at ISCB: A-Levels Mode

The British Baccalaureate at ISCB follows the British A-Levels Programme, offering personalised, flexible education geared towards each student’s future university studies.

The British system encourages active learning and reflection, with small class sizes that allow for individualised attention. Students are prepared to pass the GCE A-Levels exams, a fundamental requirement for admission to the world’s top universities.

In addition, ISCB combines British methodology with the emotional and academic support necessary for each student to develop their full potential in a motivating and safe environment.

A Level Graduation

The A-Levels (Advanced Levels) represent the highest level of academic certification within the British education system and are among the most prestigious pre-university qualifications internationally.

Their modular and specialized structure allows students to design a personalized academic pathway, selecting key subjects aligned with their academic and professional objectives.

Unlike other baccalaureate systems, A-Levels focus on fewer subjects, allowing for an in-depth study of each chosen field. This approach fosters analytical thinking and research skills.

  • Three subjects to choose from: Specialise in the areas that you are most passionate about and that best suit your goals.
  • Flexible schedule: Includes study time within school hours to encourage autonomy and independent learning.
  • Small classes: A personalised learning environment that encourages interaction and individualised support.
  • Academic and professional guidance: Continuous support in the choice of subjects, university applications and career planning.
  • Academic depth: A detailed approach to each subject that encourages critical thinking and analysis.
  • International recognition: Qualification accepted at universities around the world, including the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Within the British Baccalaureate, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a unique opportunity for students to develop an independent research project.

The EPQ encourages creativity, autonomy and critical thinking skills. Students choose a topic they are passionate about and research it in depth, culminating in a written assignment and presentation.

Many universities particularly value this project, as it demonstrates the student’s ability to research, analyse and communicate complex ideas. At ISCB, students receive expert guidance to achieve high academic standards in their projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions about A-Levels at ISCB.

What are A-Levels?

The A-Levels (Advanced Levels) are pre-university qualifications within the British education system, typically studied between the ages of 16 and 19 over two academic years (Year 12 and Year 13). During this stage, students specialise in three or four subjects in depth, developing skills such as critical thinking, analytical ability and problem-solving, all of which are essential for university entry.

What requirements do I need to meet to be able to take A-Levels at ISCB?

To access our A-Level programme, students must have an IGCSE level 5 or 6 or an equivalent qualification, such as the Spanish ESO. Additionally, while the minimum English level required is equivalent to B2 (First Certificate), we recommend a C1 (Advanced) level for a better learning experience, along with a strong academic foundation in the chosen subjects.

Regardless, we carry out an interview and an assessment to ensure that this option is the right fit for you.

Apart from international universities, can I access Spanish universities?

Yes. A-Levels are a recognised qualification in Spain and qualify students for Spanish universities. A-Level grades are converted to a scale of 1 to 10 and students can take specific tests to improve their final grade by up to 14 points.

In addition, some universities may require a C1 level certificate in Catalan or Spanish, which we will also help you with.

How are A-Levels different from other baccalaureates?

A-Levels offer a highly rigorous and well-respected programme. They also stand out for their flexibility and academic depth, allowing you to focus on the subjects that truly interest you and align them with your university and professional future.

Three subjects to choose from: Specialise in the areas that you are most passionate about and that best suit your goals.
Flexible schedule: Includes study time within school hours to encourage autonomy and independent learning.
Small classes: A personalised learning environment that encourages interaction and individualised support.
Academic and professional guidance: Continuous support in the choice of subjects, university applications and career planning.
Academic depth: A detailed approach to each subject that encourages critical thinking and analysis.
International recognition: Qualification accepted at universities around the world, including the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA.

Which is more difficult, the International Baccalaureate or A-Levels?

Both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and British A-Levels Programme are demanding programmes, but their difficulty depends on the student's profile.

The International Baccalaureate covers six areas of knowledge and requires a balance between science, humanities and arts. In contrast, A-Levels allow students to focus on fewer subjects, studying them in much greater depth.

For this reason, the British Baccalaureate may be more suitable for students who know what they want to study and are looking for specialised, practical training. In addition, A-Levels are recognised worldwide and facilitate direct access to universities without the need to take the general phase of the EBAU in Spain.
